GSA's Earth Day Workshop Recap: Promoting Sustainability and Efficiency

By: Mary Simms

On April 24, GSA hosted an educational Earth Day event in Oakland, bringing together federal agencies to explore innovative ways to promote sustainability and streamline operations. The workshop kicked off with insightful sessions on personal property management for federal agencies, led by Sharon Gorospe, Utilization & Donation Lead Property Disposal Specialist for GSA’s Office of Personal Property Management.  Danielle Bogni, Supervisory Program Specialist for the Energy and Sustainability Branch and Mark Reiss, Customer Service Director, with GSA’s Office of Customer and Stakeholder Engagement also presented best practices and provided training for other federal agencies in attendance.

Presenters also shared additional perspectives on sustainability and electric vehicles, highlighting the importance of responsible asset management in achieving environmental goals.   Attendees learned how GSA helps federal agencies dispose of personal property that is no longer needed, facilitating the process of acquiring these items for other agencies, individuals, communities or nonprofits in need.

Participants gained valuable insights into disposing of excess federal personal property, learning about the steps involved in reporting, reutilizing, donating, and recycling excess items through GSA’s Personal Property Utilization and Donation Program.

In the afternoon, attendees explored sustainable solutions and green procurement strategies available through GSA’s programs, including GSA Global Supply™, GSA Schedules, and GSA Fleet. The event emphasized the role of sustainable procurement practices in reducing environmental impact and maximizing resource efficiency.

Participants had the opportunity to earn six Continuous Learning Points (CLPs) while engaging in discussions and networking with peers. GSA received enthusiastic participation from the Social Security Administration, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and U.S. Courts, underscoring the growing commitment to environmental stewardship within federal agencies.

By harnessing the power of sustainability initiatives and embracing efficient procurement practices, federal agencies are not only reducing their ecological footprint but also maximizing resources and driving positive change. Stay tuned for more opportunities to champion sustainability and innovation with GSA!

Remember, together, we can make a difference. Let's continue to lead by example and pave the way for a greener, more sustainable future.
