GSA targets 70 percent waste diversion at the Denver Federal Center by 2020
The DFC expanded its recycling efforts by launching additional single stream recycling and organic waste collection services for six of its buildings. GSA, the manager and landlord of the DFC, has had a robust single stream recycling program in place since 2006 at the 623-acre DFC campus in Lakewood, Colo. Last fiscal year, the DFC recycled 140 tons of single stream items and was able to avoid close to $6,000 in local landfill costs. And, for every ton of material kept out of the landfill, GSA saves 980,000 gallons of water and approximately 2,380 trees. Read the full story.
Emerging Trends In Federal Workplaces Save Money, Increase Efficiency
GSA’s Region 8 Headquarters office in Building 41 embarked on its next phase of workplace transformation. Completed in June 2015, the office space now features a complete open office concept with a plethora of meeting and collaborative spaces, assigned/unassigned/hoteling seating options, a quiet zone, and two large social zones. Employees at all levels were engaged throughout the process to ensure that the work space supports the many work patterns and activities of their day The space represents how GSA does business and focuses on the importance of mission and people. It is about choice and flexibility, and it puts an emphasis on wellness through daylighting, mobility, and variety. The space strives to provide a balance between private and collaborative options in an activity-based and zoned design. The space supports GSA's mission and because of this, the new workplace also serves as a living model of the modern workplace for their federal customers.
GSA has been able to reduce its footprint by 50% resulting in 136 sf per person. Rent savings exceeds $850K per year, with a project payback realized in less than three years. Most federal agencies are faced with having to reduce their real estate footprint, doing more with less and finding ways to save money. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine what a new workplace would look like and what it can accomplish, so take advantage of the tours that the GSA provides to federal customers so you too can be exposed to new ideas and concepts of a modern workplace.
