Underground Storage Tanks (USTs)
An underground storage tank (UST) is defined as a tank that has 10% or more of its volume underground. USTs are commonly used to store petroleum products (fuel oil, gasoline, diesel). GSA effectively manages USTs in accordance with federal, state and local regulations. To responsibly manage USTs, GSA monitors compliance with Subtitle I of the Solid Waste Disposal Act, the UST provisions of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, and EPA regulations 40 CFR Part 280. GSA's Public Buildings Service (PBS) maintains an inventory of USTs located on GSA owned properties. PBS routinely inspects and maintains USTs to prevent and minimize leaks into the environment. Federal agencies that own or operate USTs on GSA managed properties have the responsibility to manage those USTs in compliance with the same applicable laws and regulations.
