Patrick V. McNamara Federal Building
477 Michigan Avenue
Detroit, MI 48226-2523
The Patrick V. McNamara Federal Building, designed in the Brutalist style of reinforced concrete with repeating motifs, opened in downtown Detroit in 1976. Named for former U.S. Senator Patrick Vincent McNamara, who served in Congress from 1955-66, the building features nearly one million square feet of rentable space and occupies the full city block bound by Howard and Second streets and Cass and Michigan avenues.
In 2007 and 2008, the McNamara facility was the recipient of a Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) Office Building of the Year (TOBY) Award in the Government category, and it has earned ENERGY STAR® designations every year since 2008.
The most recent (2012) GSA Tenant Satisfaction Survey reported 67% of the building's tenants are more than satisfied with the building and GSA services (rating of four or higher on a five-point scale).

Recovery Act Project Update Recovery Act-funded modernization work on the McNamara Federal Building began in 2010 and was completed in the summer of 2014. The project included an FBI office build-out of eight floors and the addition of an FBI-dedicated entryway, conferencing center, mailroom, and exercise areas. The project also rebuilt the public lobby to alleviate congestion and replaced the emergency generator and fire alarm system. Energy-saving "green" elements of the project included installing insulation around lobbies and entryways, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and high-efficiency lighting with occupancy sensors.
