Located in downtown Detroit, the Patrick V. McNamara Federal Building features nearly one million square feet of rentable space and occupies a full city block bound by Howard and Second streets and Cass and Michigan avenues. In the most recent (2015) Tenant Satisfaction Survey, 55% rated the building and GSA services a four or five on a five-point scale.

Public Transportation & Parking A Detroit People Mover station delivers riders across from the building on Cass Avenue. Two-hour parking is available in metered spaces near the building, while adjacent surface lots offer public parking for $5-10 per day.
Building Access All visitors must submit to security screening and present a valid ID card. Weapons, ammunition, pointed items, aerosols, alcohol, hand tools, and hardware are prohibited.
Plaza Use To request use of the McNamara Federal Plaza for public communication, complete GSA Form 3453 and submit it to the Property Management Office, Rm. 115, 477 Michigan Ave., Detroit, MI 48226.
Project Update A Recovery Act-funded modernization of the McNamara building from 2010-14 included an FBI office build-out of eight floors and the addition of an FBI-dedicated entryway, conference center, mailroom, and exercise areas. The project also rebuilt the public lobby to alleviate congestion, replaced the emergency generator and fire alarm system, and installed energy-saving insulation around lobbies and entryways, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and high-efficiency lighting with occupancy sensors.

History & Architecture The McNamara building is designed in the Brutalist style using reinforced concrete with repeating motifs. Opened in 1976, the building is named for former U.S. Senator Patrick Vincent McNamara, who served in Congress from 1955-66.
Awards In 2007 and 2008 the McNamara Federal Building was the recipient of a Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) Office Building of the Year (TOBY) Award in the Government category and has earned ENERGY STAR® designations every year since 2008.
