Good morning! Welcome to the 2008 GSA Expo!

The GSA Expo began in 1994 as a simple trade show. Attendance that first year was about a thousand people.

Today, Expo is GSA’s premier training and customer outreach event. Attendance over the next few days will hit eight thousand from more than 300 federal, state and local agencies! This year we welcome to the GSA Expo our 60,000th customer and 7,000th exhibiting company.

What makes this such an attractive event?

  • The opportunity to network with hundreds of GSA and other agency experts;
  • 270 certified classes;
  • The chance to meet with more than 700 GSA vendors;
  • And, oh yes, it’s free for all federal, state and local government employees.

Behind these doors are more than 730 vendors, all under schedule to GSA, all anxious to meet and possibly become your supplier of choice. Fully two-thirds are certified small businesses from every official SBA classification. So if you’re looking for a Hubzone or Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business to meet your agency goals, you’ll find them behind these doors.

You should also know that more than 500 of the vendors participate in our Disaster Relief Program, our Cooperative Purchasing Program, and our 1122 Program, which are now available to our state and local customers.

Many members of the GSA leadership team are here this week. You’ve met David Bibb, the Deputy Administrator and our Chief Environmental Officer. He and FAS Commissioner Jim Williams can tell you all about GSA’s efforts to “green” the federal government, and how we can help your agency meet its environmental mandates. Public Buildings Service Commissioner David Winstead is also here and will talk about how PBS is leading the way in sustainable design and energy efficient courthouses and federal buildings.

This is an enormous event with many logistical challenges. I’d like to thank the entire GSA team – Gary Feit, Harry Butler and all their co-workers – for arranging what I know will be our best Expo ever.

Please remember that everyone with a green GSA badge is here to help make this a successful conference.  Many of our top senior managers and regional administrators are also here and will be glad to help address your questions and concerns.  All of us are committed to the same goal: excellence in the business of government.

So let me again thank all of you for your strong support of GSA and your participation in Expo.  We look forward to building on our strong relationship with each of you in the future. Now it’s time to cut the ribbon and get on with the show!

Thank you very much!
