Lighthouse Preservation Efforts Featured

On August 5th, NBC's Today Show interviewed Peter Jurewicz, the new owner of the Thimble Shoal Lighthouse in Virginia.  GSA's Office of Real Property Disposal sold this lighthouse in its first National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act (NHLPA) public sales in 2005.  GSA has the following historic lighthouses currently for sale on its online auction site of surplus federal property:

In the near future, the following lighthouses will be for sale online:

  • Duluth Harbor South Breakwater Light (Duluth, MN)
  • Conneaut Harbor West Pierhead Light (Conneaut, OH)
  • Cleveland Harbor East Pierhead Light (Cleveland, OH)
  • Old Orchard Shoal Light (Oakwood Beach, NY)

Congress designated August 7 as National Lighthouse Day, recognizing the important role lighthouses play in our nation's heritage.  GSA, partnering with the United States Coast Guard and the National Park Service, promotes the preservation of these assets through their transfer or sale to new stewards under the NHLPA.  Since the statute's enactment in 2000, GSA has successfully conveyed 46 historic light stations to new public and private stewards with historic protections in place.
