Brasseux Helps Unveil GSA-Army Pact for Electric Vehicles

As prepared for delivery

Remarks by
Barnaby Brasseux
Deputy Administrator
U.S. General Services Administration
Army Electric Vehicle Lease Announcement
Fort Myer, Virginia
January 12, 2009

Thank you, Paul. Good afternoon, everyone.

On behalf of Acting Administrator Jim Williams and all of us at GSA, let me start by saying how pleased I am to be with you today and to represent our agency at this fantastic ceremony.

I’m also very proud. This agreement affirms our strong relationship and the solemn bond that links GSA to our men and women in uniform.  The Army happens to be GSA Fleet’s largest customer -- – 68,000 of the 213,000 vehicles we lease go to the Army.

My second reason for feeling good about today is that this pact is as green as it gets – these vehicles produce zero emissions! The leasing agreement between the Army and GSA is therefore an important part of our on-going effort to help reduce the federal government’s carbon footprint.

As a chief provider of goods, services and workspace, we believe we have an exceptional chance in the years ahead to promote an aggressive agenda focused on significant, positive environmental change.

Federal agencies turn to GSA for the vehicles in their fleets, but also for:

  • Their buildings;
  • The lighting in their offices; and,
  • And millions of other supplies and services;

That has given us the opportunity to promote;

  • Environmentally friendly buildings;
  • Practices such as telework;
  • And supplies and services that will help agencies meet their missions and make us all more responsible stewards of our environment.

As I said, the vehicles we’re showcasing today are part of our ambitious green agenda. And by the way, they’re terrific:

  • They require minimal maintenance;
  • They’re a perfect fit for an army base in terms of size, speed, and flexibility; and,
  • One – just one  – will save nearly 2,700 gallon of fuel over six years compared to conventional vehicles.

Before I close, let me give a quick plug for GSA Fleet and our wonderful leasing program. I wouldn’t be standing here if it weren’t for our team and this program, which offers full service leasing, from maintenance and repair services to online tools to monitor vehicles. You may not know that we operate one of the largest non-tactical federal fleets in the U.S. government. We serve more than 75 agencies. And not to go on too long, but GSA Fleet offers the most competitive full-service lease in the industry.

So thank you again. Please know that we consider serving the Army part and parcel of serving our nation. The work you do day in and day out is of enormous importance, and it is thus a pleasure and a privilege to help you achieve your mission. Thank you very much.
