U.S. General Services Administration
FBI Building Dedication
July 27, 2009
Thank you, Special Agent Cox. It is an honor to be with all of you today.
As everyone here knows, the FBI has a critical and complex mission – and it has never been more important than it is today. On behalf of all of us who benefit from what you do, thank you.
By comparison, the GSA’s mission is rather simple. Our job is to enable the other government agencies to do what they do best. We leverage the business of government. We support many with our products and services, so they can work unencumbered. We sweat the small stuff, so they don’t have to. And, by the way, we also sweat the big stuff.
So it is, and has been, with the FBI. Over the years, GSA has had a great partnership with the FBI. In 2004, a long range plan was developed by the FBI to relocate all FBI field offices into properly sized, secure, single-tenant, stand-alone facilities. Of the 56 field offices, 33 required relocation. A final plan was approved by Mr. Mueller and the GSA Administrator in 2005.
This magnificent building is one result of those efforts. I am always proud when we can celebrate, on a day like today, and see the results of the hard work of hundreds of people within the FBI, GSA, the community and our project partners. We get a chance to step back and look at what we all have accomplished as a team.
As we open the doors to the new regional home of the FBI, it is important to recognize that the FBI will be doing cutting-edge work inside to keep us safe. It is only fitting that they have a state-of-the-art workspace in which to do it.
I think we have accomplished that – and more. This building is built for today and tomorrow.
And this building is green! And we at GSA know green. We are currently driving the green industry as we invest $5.5 billion in Recovery Act funds, in order to improve our country and our lives. We firmly believe that building green will deliver lasting progress toward modernizing our nation’s infrastructure, helping us reduce the federal government’s consumption of energy and water, and increasing our use of clean and renewable sources of energy.
This builds on a long history of leadership, which began in the 1970’s. We are proud of our accomplishments in providing environmentally sound or sustainable products and services, reducing waste and pollution, and making healthy work environments for federal employees.
The environmentally friendly features in this building include many regionally produced and recycled materials, storm water management and several water conserving features. Also included are high ceilings and generous windows that create a bright and open interior, and natural materials such as limestone and granite.
I know that in the years to come GSA will carry on the high ideals and worthy endeavors that have been the hallmarks of our partnership with the FBI.
Your mission is extremely important and, on behalf of GSA, I extend my very best wishes to you all. Our commitment to the FBI doesn’t end here. We’ll be working with you along the way to ensure your success in this new building – and the many that will follow.
