Federal Partners Work Harder To Achieve Mission Goals & Save Taxpayer Money

The Denver Federal Center is home to the second highest concentration of federal workers outside of the Washington D.C. area with more than 6,200 federal employees. It's a vibrant, secure 623-acre campus that has been part of the Lakewood community since the early 1940s. The DFC houses 28 different agencies in 44 federal buildings, totaling four million square feet of rentable space.  

Because the DFC is also the central location for Interior employees in the Denver metropolitan area, moving other DOI bureaus and offices to the DFC would allow for stronger collaboration and coordination between Interior bureaus and its federal partners, enhancing the ability of DOI to achieve its mission goals.

In light of this, Sally Jewell, Secretary, U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI), and Denise Turner Roth, Administrator, General Services Administration (GSA) signed the Denver Federal Center (DFC) Long-Term Space Strategy Working Group Charter.

Through this Working Group (WG), DOI and GSA senior managers and subject matter experts have held eight meetings throughout 2015 to build a partnership with the goals of assessing the nature and extent of potential opportunities for cost savings by consolidating commercially leased space in the Denver metro area to available DFC space.

The WG Principals developed the following vision statement: “DOI Staff in the Denver Metro Area working in modern, efficient, quality, Federally-owned space that enables effective mission accomplishment.”

In these collaborative meetings, DOI and GSA work together toward common goals of resolving challenges, saving taxpayer money and working smarter. These meetings demonstrate how two large agencies with diverse missions can work together towards positive gains for all stakeholders involved.

The DOI-GSA DFC WG will continue meetings into 2016 and beyond to identify available DFC space, calculate projected costs for consolidations, analyze budgets and develop a long term space strategy for the DFC. In the future, the WG will seek approval of senior DOI and GSA leadership, identify funding needs and potential sources, and appoint project managers to work with GSA on implementations.

GSA WG members include the Public Buildings Service, the Client Solutions Division, and the Denver Federal Center Service Center.
