Pacific Rim hosts Asian American small business owners for Asian Pacific American Heritage month

GSA’s Pacific Rim Region affirmed its commitment to helping small business grow and prosper in our current economy by hosting an Asian Pacific American small business roundtable in recognition of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and National Small Business Week.

Regional Administrator Ruth Cox conducted the event on May 24, 2012, at the San Francisco Federal Building. Cox shared her vision for the region and identified their critical role in helping GSA meet its sustainability and small business goals. Businesses, such as architectural design firms and medical supply producers attended looking to gain insight on business growth opportunities with GSA.

Cox’s Special Assistant Vannarith Tamom welcomed the attendees and urged them to utilize the presented information to make their decisions on whether to pursue a GSA Schedule, a powerful and effective tool that provides contracts with commercial companies to grant access commercial products and services at volume discount pricing. Small businesses who utilize the GSA Schedule have the unique advantage of becoming pre-approved vendors who can connect with a wide range of government opportunities. Thus, the GSA Schedule allows for the growth and expansion of small businesses that utilize this beneficial resource.

Office of Small Business Utilization Business Specialist Lori Falkenstrom gave the assembled businesses a briefing on pursuing a GSA Schedule and described some of the pertinent websites for companies looking to partner with the federal government.

"Small businesses don't have a huge marketing budget. GSA Schedule increases their visibility and provides more of an advantage, allowing the government customer to order off their contract vehicle," said Falkenstrom.

As the roundtable came to an end, participants engaged in a Q & A session that focused on opportunities for businesses to qualify for submission into the GSA Schedule as well as telework/mobile technology strategies offered by GSA.

This is just beginning. Roundtable discussions are planned for July 2012 in San Jose, California.
