Social Security Administration National Support Center Project

Social Security Administration National Support Center Project
GSA Mid-Atlantic Region and the Social Security Administration (SSA), along with project partners, are collaborating to design and construct the SSA's new National Support Center in Urbana, Maryland.  The new 300,000 gross square foot facility will include data, office and warehouse space, as well as include approximately 200 parking spaces.  Sustainable materials will be used and the building will incorporate innovative sustainable technologies, including energy-efficient heating and cooling systems and on-site renewable energy sources.

The new data center will replace the existing National Computer Center located at the SSA Headquarters Campus in Woodlawn, Maryland, which houses computer operations essential to prompt and accurate payment of benefits to Americans.  The existing computer center was constructed in 1979 and the infrastructure systems are approaching the end of their useful lives.  The new data center will seek LEED Gold certification, and is scheduled to complete construction in late 2014.

Environmental Assessment
An Environmental Assessment (EA) documents and assesses the impacts of the proposed project on natural, social, economic and cultural resources and is required pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

An EA was completed while selecting the site and is available below.
