Two Local Federal Facilities Earn Enerty Star®

ALBANY - Energy efficient technologies, systems and products integrated into the James T. Foley U.S. Courthouse as well as the Leo W. O’Brien Federal Building have helped each of these federal facilities earn the Environmental Protection Agency’s prestigious Energy Star designation. Both buildings, located in Albany, NY, are operated and managed by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA).

The Energy Star designations for our buildings are not only proof of our commitment to good environmental stewardship but also demonstrate lowered energy costs, and that’s good news for taxpayers.”
The ENERGY STAR is recognized nationwide as a symbol for superior energy efficiency and environmental protection. It signifies that a building’s energy performance rates in the top 25 percent of facilities nationwide. Commercial buildings that earn the ENERGY STAR use an average of 40 percent less energy than typical buildings and also release 35 percent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Nationally there are over 12,000 ENERGY STAR buildings, including 195 federal buildings and U.S. Courthouses that are under GSA’s jurisdiction. Eleven of these ENERGY STAR federal facilities are located in GSA’s Northeast and Caribbean Region.
The five-story, 231,020 gross square foot James T. Foley U.S. Courthouse opened in 1934, while the nine-story, 242,641 gross square foot Leo W. O’Brian Federal Building was completed in 1961.
ENERGY STAR was introduced by EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency. Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 50 different kinds of products, new homes, and commercial and industrial buildings.
Products and buildings that have earned the ENERGY STAR designation prevent greenhouse gas emissions by meeting strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the government.
