GSA Seeks Developer Ideas for Baltimore Federal Facility
July 31, 2013
Philadelphia, PA -- Today, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced that it will seek ideas from the real estate development community on exchanging the Metro West Federal facility in Baltimore, Maryland. GSA is asking industry to submit ideas that would allow the government to exchange the building for construction and repair services on other federal facilities. The building will be vacant in 2014, and this is the first part of the overall process to put the facility to new use and get the best deal for the taxpayers.
“Now that the Metro West facility will soon no longer serve the government's needs, GSA is seeking ideas from the development community on a potential exchange of the building,” said GSA Regional Administrator Sara Manzano-Diaz. “The responses we receive will provide us insight into how we might revitalize a property in Baltimore’s central business district, leverage the value of this building, and save taxpayer dollars.”
This is the latest in GSA’s ongoing efforts to make more efficient use of the government's real estate assets while also getting unneeded properties off of the government’s books. The Social Security Administration will be leaving the building next year. GSA will issue an official Request for Information (RFI), which is an innovative approach to property disposal that allows stakeholders to provide input on the possible exchange of the building. The government can then use the submissions to make informed decisions and possibly create a deal structure that will dispose of the facility while also letting the government leverage the building for necessary improvements to other government buildings. The RFI is the first step in the process.
The RFI will open on August 8, 2013, and the real estate development community will have 45 days to provide input. The RFI will be posted on FedBizOpps.gov. GSA will also host an industry day in the near future, which will allow interested parties to learn more about submitting ideas.
The Metro West Facility is located at 300 N. Greene Street in Baltimore, MD. It is a 1.1 million gross square foot facility constructed in 1980. The facility is located in the west central business district of Baltimore, Maryland. The facility includes two buildings connected by a two-story wing. The Metro West facility features 410 garage parking spaces and surface parking for 108 cars. The facility sits on nearly 11 acres of land. The RFI will be posted on www.fbo.gov and www.gsa.gov/metrowest.
