Pacific Rim celebrates McKinleyville Courthouse groundbreaking

On July 8, 2013, GSA Region 9, Eureka Skyline Partners, LLC, and federal and local officials gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the start of construction of a new U.S. Courthouse in McKinleyville, California. The 22,853-square-foot courthouse will feature one courtroom and will provide office space for the U.S. Magistrate Court, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, the Probation Department, the U.S. Marshals Service and the U.S. Attorney’s office. This new construction project, located in the Airport Business Park, will consolidate a number of leases from the local area into one judicial facility built to suit the tenants’ specifications then leased back.
GSA Leasing Contracting Officer Susan Truong attended the event and made remarks on behalf of Regional Administrator Ruth Cox. “This is an important milestone for GSA, the Judiciary, Eureka Skyline Partners LLC, and the city,” said Truong. “Our Judiciary has a very important mission, as we all know. And it’s become even more critical that they have efficient and cost-effective facilities with an up-to-date infrastructure to support their operations. That’s where GSA comes in.”
The region negotiated a 20-year lease on behalf of the courts family which will allow several of these agencies to relocate from a 100-year-old facility in Eureka with seismic concerns to a brand new, energy-efficient courthouse.
The building design incorporates the latest technology in sustainability and energy saving measures including high-efficiency heating and cooling systems designed to minimize energy consumption without compromising comfort through multiple zones and variable refrigerant flow. Lighting systems, comprised of high-efficiency fixtures, are controlled by automatic sensors throughout the facility to ensure energy savings when areas are not in use. Water usage is strictly controlled through low-flow fixtures throughout. Together, these sustainable features will help the courthouse achieve a minimum of LEED® Silver certification.
According to Airport Business Park Developer, Steve Moser, “The building design meets stringent federal requirements as well as incorporates the latest technology in a beautiful setting. We think the tenants will be very happy with the building design and impressed with the high-efficiency heating and cooling systems. It’s a wonderful project proving that a large building can still be beautiful and energy efficient.”
Construction will begin in September 2013 and is scheduled for completion in fall 2014.
