Region 4 Hosts Memorial Day Ceremony 2014:  We Remember

On May 28th, GSA Region 4 paused to remember the 1.1 million Americans who gave their lives in all our nation’s wars.

The ceremony, entitled “We Remember” featured an address by Master Sergeant Carl Beck. As a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne Division,  MSG Beck, participated in some of the most pivotal engagements of WWII. On June 6th, 1944, he and the other members of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment parachuted in Normandy, France as a part of the D-Day Invasion that began the liberation of Europe. Three months later, he jumped into Holland as a part of the famous Operation Market Garden. And again in December 1944, MSG Beck’s unit served at the Battle of the Bulge

MSG Beck captivated the audience with stories of bravery and sacrifice by those who served in WWII. He recalled that there were occasions where the enemy had superior  weapons and greater numbers, …“but we were better gunners and right was on our side”

MSG Beck has participated in several ceremonies to commemorate the D-Day Invasion – most recently in 2004, where he parachuted into Normandy on the 60 anniversary of the invasion, at 79 year of age.

The ceremony was led by Master of Ceremonies David Hofstetter (U.S. Army) and featured presentations Region 4 employees who are veterans of our armed forces. The region is proud that over 40 percent of its employees served in the military.

Through presentations and songs, the program was a salute not only to our departed soldiers but to the countless families, friends and loved ones who still experience their loss. Video monitors showed images of those actively serving their country and those being laid to rest, while the names of 21 service members, killed in action, scrolled across the screen.

In honoring those that made the ultimate sacrifice, we are once more reminded that freedom is not free.
