The Federal Strategic Sourcing Initiative

The Federal Strategic Sourcing Initiative (FSSI) is an innovative approach that uses data-driven purchasing that leverages the scale of the government. This initiative reduces bureaucracy and helps agencies combine their purchases to achieve greater savings collectively.

GSA's strategic sourcing efforts have saved the government more than $400 million in direct savings . The programs offer greater discounts, provide improved management, support small business participation, and represent best practices.

In addition to the creation of significant savings, this program also increases small business participation in government contracting. For example, 76% of the vendors in GSA’s strategic sourcing initiative for office supplies are small businesses. Those small businesses have seen sales of more than $490 million since 2010, when this initiative began. Strategic Sourcing relies on principles that aim to meet socio economic and sustainability goals; in doing so, both the government and industry come out ahead.
