GSA Partners With Neighbors To Create Innovative Walking Groups

Image of 6 people walking at the Denver Federal CenterDid you know that the average office worker sits for about 10 hours a day, making calls, working on the computer, eating lunch and more.  Add sitting at home and it adds up to much of your day being sedentary.  Fewer than half of all adults get enough physical activity to reduce their risk of chronic disease and only a quarter of high school students get the recommended amount.  Physical inactivity accounts for 86% of our nation's health care costs.  Building walking into your daily routine can reduce disease and improve your overall health.

The Rocky Mountain Region, U.S. General Services Administration is supporting Surgeon General Vivek Murthy's walking initiative, "Step It Up." Beginning September 22nd, GSA partnered with St. Anthony Hospital and Walk2Connect to demonstrate how everyone can become part of Dr. Murthy's walking and walkable communities campaign.

There are many benefits to walking:

  • Giving yourself energy
  • Boosting your Vitamin D levels
  • Keeping your weight in check
  • Strengthening your heart
  • Helping prevent dementia
  • Making you happy

By walking together, we can transform walking from a choice to a behavior for positive whole health outcomes. Sign up for more information today at: www.letswalkcolorado.org (non-government website)
