Washington, DC - The U.S. General Services Administration today announced that Digital Signature Trust Company has received the first interim approval to operate on the Access Certificates for Electronic Services (ACES) contract. The ACES contract is managed by the Office of Information Security in GSA's Federal Technology Service.

ACES is intended to provide identification, authentication, and non-repudiation via the use of digital signature technology as a means for individuals and business entities to be authenticated when accessing, retrieving, and submitting information with the government. It is a key initiative in assisting the agencies' response to the Government Paperwork Elimination Act. Each industry partner is required to undergo a certification and accreditation process on their ACES systems prior to receiving authority to issue digital signature certificates under this contract. Digital Signature Trust Company is the first to complete the process and receive interim approval to operate. Final approval will be granted within approximately six months, once Digital Signature Trust has demonstrated its continuing compliance in the operational environment.

"Attaining this approval fulfills a major milestone in the ACES program. We congratulate Digital Signature Trust on its achievement," stated David J. Barram, GSA Administrator.

The remaining industry partners, operational research consultants and AT&T are continuing to work through their certification and accreditation processes. We expect all to be completed by the end of May 2000.

Additional information on ACES is available at the web site /aces. For further information about the ACES contract, contact Jon D. Faye at 202-708-6099.
