GSA Opens New Green Crossing in Maine

New Maine border station. Length 0:56

At one of the easternmost points of Maine, GSA has just finished building a border station. Besides being the first new crossing point on the border between the U.S. and Canada in at least 20 years, it's also one of the greenest places to enter the country. Inside, more than 200 windows allow for natural lighting throughout the facility, and low-flow fixtures aim to use 40 percent less water than traditional plumbing fixtures. Outside the new building, a boulder garden makes use of granite that was blasted during construction, saving the need to haul it away. It is projected to receive a Gold rating from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, an exceptional achievement for a facility that operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in a challenging climate.
