Former Hardesty Federal Complex
In 2011, GSA sold the 18-acre Hardesty Federal Complex property through a public auction to Hardesty Economic Development Corporation -- a Missouri non-profit corporation. Located at the corner of Hardesty and Independence avenues in Kansas City, Mo., GSA remains connected to the property and continues to be responsible for sampling and remediation of the environmental contamination.
Current Environmental Project Efforts
Current environmental testing efforts focus on two areas: groundwater and indoor air quality.
GSA and its environmental contractors are studying pollutants in groundwater on-and-off site. Dry cleaning by-products and fuel – likely due to World War II operations – are present, and Trichloroethylene (TCE) is the primary chemical of concern.
According to Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, one of GSA’s many partners, the primary potential pathway of exposure to TCE for nearby residents is vapor intrusion. This occurs when air inside a house or building becomes contaminated by a chemical as it evaporates from the soil or groundwater under the building.
GSA continues to work with residents immediately north of the complex to test the air quality inside their homes.
The project is nearing the end of the Remedial Investigation phase of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) cleanup process.
GSA is committed to ensuring that any potential environmental concerns are addressed as quickly as possible. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will continue to provide oversight and assistance on the cleanup of the site. If any testing results indicate a potential health concern, GSA will work with environmental health experts and environmental regulators to find solutions, and will communicate those concerns to the community immediately.
