Emergency Management

GSA’s Mid-Atlantic Region plays a vital role in support of federal agencies, the National Capital Region, as well as state, local and tribal governments in emergency response activities. The Mid-Atlantic Region takes an all hazards approach in planning for natural disasters, technological emergencies, terrorism consequences, resource shortages and other disorders.

In an emergency GSA provides support under the terms of the National Response Framework – such as buildings and space, supplies, tools and equipment, telecommunications and information technology and transportation services.

In the event of an emergency, federal employees should follow their own agency’s emergency procedures and monitor media announcements to obtain disaster or emergency-related information. For additional information on GSA resources, please refer to the Emergency Response page.

The Mid-Atlantic Region has a team of highly trained emergency management professionals who are dedicated to providing an effective emergency management program. This team regularly reviews all aspects of its established contingency plans and are focused and prepared to deal with a variety of emergency and disasters under a wide range of circumstances.

Continuity Planning

As a national priority and as mandated through Presidential Directive, all federal agencies should have emergency preparedness plans and Continuity Plans. Continuity planning is intended to ensure continuity of essential federal functions under all circumstances as outlined at FEMA - Continuity of Operations.

Essential functions are those that enable federal agencies to provide vital services, exercise civil authority, maintain the safety and well-being of the general public, and sustain the industrial/economic base in an emergency. An agency’s continuity plan shall designate alternate facilities to ensure uninterrupted operations.

During emergencies and disasters, federal agencies rely on GSA to continue delivering expert solutions, acquisition services, and superior workplaces, while the public counts on GSA's customer agencies to continue delivering their services as well.
