GSA Opens Two New Lanes to El Chaparral Ahead of Memorial Day

Increases total number of southbound lanes to six

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. – The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) will open two additional lanes of the southbound Interstate 5 (I-5) freeway, part of a newly constructed roadway, on May 22, 2019 at 9 a.m. as part of Phase 3 of the San Ysidro Land Port of Entry (LPOE) modernization and expansion project. With the opening of these new lanes, there will now be a total of six lanes on the I-5 southbound freeway just south of the Camino De La Plaza Bridge. An additional four lanes will open in June 2019.

“We realize that Memorial Day weekend is the traditional start of the summer travel season,” said GSA’s Public Buildings Service Deputy Regional Commissioner Patricia Chang-Lynn. “As modernization and expansion of the San Ysidro LPOE continues, GSA is providing the traveling public additional vehicle lanes to cross the U.S.-Mexico border.”

Southbound travelers are advised to adhere to posted signage which announces changes to freeway traffic patterns into Mexico.

WHERE: Southbound I-5 just past the Camino De La Plaza bridge for vehicle lanes leading to El Chaparral.

WHAT: Two new lanes added to the four I-5 southbound lanes currently in use.

WHEN: Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at 9 a.m.
