New Anniston U.S. Courthouse
In Fiscal Year 2016, GSA announced Congress had appropriated funding for multiple Federal Courthouse construction projects across the country - one project is in the Northern District of Alabama, Anniston, AL. The funding approval will allow the Judiciary to meet its current and long-term needs for security, accessibility and operational efficiency in Anniston, AL. This courthouse will consist of approximately 63,000 gross square feet and will include thirteen secure enclosed parking spaces. The project will also be designed and constructed to achieve LEED Gold certification.
The new courthouse will provide two District courtrooms and three chambers to accommodate three judges (one active District, one visiting District and one Bankruptcy). Other court related tenants include the U.S. Marshals Service and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The total size requirement for this project is 3 acres.
GSA evaluated eight potential sites, following a request for "expressions of interest" of potential sites to construct a new courthouse advertised in the Anniston Star in May 2016. An Open House and stakeholder meetings were held in June 2016, to inform the public and key stakeholders of the GSA site selection process and the proposed new Anniston Federal Courthouse project. On Dec. 21, 2016, GSA convened a Public Meeting to announce the three locations under consideration and solicit public input.
The General Services Administration released the Notice of Availability of the Draft Environmental Assessment [PDF - 2 MB] and Cultural Resources Assessment [PDF - 20 MB] for the new Courthouse in Anniston on September 18, 2017. The review period ended on October 20, 2018.
