The current project consists of a new Land Port of Entry that will be designed and built in concurrence with a new Madawaska bridge by Maine Department of Transportation (MDOT).
Once construction begins, the port will remain open throughout. Currently, the bridge at Madawaska has been limited to 5 tons or 10,000 pounds.

MODERNIZATION AND EXPANSION
- Designed to accommodate non-intrusive inspection equipment
- Will remain a permit port with sufficient space in the design to accommodate possible change in the designation to become a commercial port
- The 2009 project was re-evaluated in 2011 and replaced by a Port Refresh Project.
- In December 2016, GSA partially funded a joint study with Maine DOT and New Brunswick DOT on an international bridge study for Madawaska and Edmundston. Twelve alternatives were identified, conceptually developed, and evaluated. The preferred alternative location selected for the Madawaska LPOE is a parcel of land, to the west of the existing LPOE and the Twin Rivers facility, that is currently owned by the U.S. government. The preferred corridor for the new International Bridge connects the USA-owned property to the existing Edmundston Port of Entry (POE), as the PSPC and the CBSA noted that the POE was adequate for the foreseeable future and there are no plans to modify or expand it (MaineDOT, et al., 2018).

The timeline for the new Madawaska land port of entry’s construction is tied to the MaineDOT and NBDTI international bridge project. GSA is committed to ensuring that the LPOE is operational when the bridge is completed.
