Federal Buildings Honored with 2014 American Institute of Architects Green Awards

GSA’s Wayne Aspinall & Edith Green-Wendell Federal Buildings Are Among Nation's Top Ten Sustainable Buildings

DENVER - The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and its Committee on the Environment (COTE) selected the U.S. General Services Administration’s (GSA) Edith Green-Wendell Wyatt Federal Building, in Portland, Oregon, and the historic Wayne Aspinall N. Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Grand Junction, Colorado, as two of its top 10 national examples of sustainable architecture and green design solutions to protect and enhance the environment.

"These investments are a perfect example of how GSA continuously works to increase efficiency and reduce spending on behalf of the American public," said GSA's Public Buildings Service Commissioner Norman Dong. "By both preserving and improving our federal buildings, we ultimately reduce energy consumption and cut costs while lowering our impact on the environment, it's a win-win."

About the Edith Green-Wendell Wyatt Federal Building:

  • The Edith Green-Wendell Wyatt Federal Building is on track to achieve a 55% reduction in energy use, saving approximately $300,000 - $400,000 in energy operating costs annually
  • It is certified as LEED® Platinum for its energy performance and environmental design features.
  • It was designed to be one of the most energy efficient office buildings in the country
  • Features including a 13,000 square foot solar roof that double as the rainwater collection system, elevators that generate power as they descend, shading devices, energy efficient lighting systems, a cistern for rainwater reuse, water conserving fixtures, and an air system that provides 100% fresh air, radiant cooling and heating, and unique exterior shading system on each side of the building.
  • The work was completed by a team of SERA Architects and Howard S. Wright Construction, a Balfour Beatty Company, who were awarded the contract in 2010.

About the Wayne N. Aspinall Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse

  • GSA converted the 1918 landmark into one of the most energy efficient, sustainable historic buildings in the country.
  • It is certified as LEED® Platinum for its energy performance and environmental design features.
  • The design aims to be GSA’s first Site Net-Zero Energy facility on the National Register exemplifying sustainable preservation.
  • The first COTE award for a GSA-owned historic building
  • The project restores and showcases historic volumes and finishes, while sensitively incorporating innovative systems and drastically reducing energy consumption.
  • Features include a roof canopy-mounted 123 kW photovoltaic array, variable-refrigerant flow heating and cooling systems, 32-well passive Geo-Exchange system, a thermally upgraded building enclosure, energy recovery, wireless controls, fluorescent and LED lighting, and post-occupancy monitoring.
  • The work was completed by a team of Westlake Reed Leskosky and The Beck Group, who were awarded the contract in 2010.

  • The COTE Top Ten Green Projects program, now in its 18th year, is the profession's best known recognition program for sustainable design excellence.
  • The program celebrates projects that are the result of a thoroughly integrated approach to architecture, natural systems and technology.
  • The projects must make a positive contribution to their communities, improve comfort for building occupants and reduce environmental impacts through strategies such as reuse of existing structures, connection to transit systems, low-impact and regenerative site development, energy and water conservation, use of sustainable or renewable construction materials, and design that improves indoor air quality.
