GSA Provides Innovative Transportation Solution to Military’s ROTC Program

Over the past four years, GSA has helped save the military more than $1.5 million in transportation costs by providing innovative solutions to accommodate their annual training. Each summer, for two weeks, several hundred Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) candidates gather outside of Seattle for annual training. In 2009, instead of leasing 500-700 vehicles and buses commercially at a high cost, the military used GSA’s Northwest/Arctic Region Fleet Management Program to implement a cost-effective transportation solution, saving ROTC resources.

GSA recommended that the ROTC program at Joint Base Lewis-McChord use GSA fleet vehicles that were underutilized or earmarked for disposal and school buses from a local district instead of leasing the cars and buses commercially.  GSA worked to identify available vehicles that were slated for disposal and contacted a school district in nearby Puyallup, Washington, to lease the buses to the ROTC program over the summer when they were not being used by the district. Not only does the ROTC save money through this approach, but the GSA vehicles are put to good use prior to auction and the school district also saves by not having to pay for buses that sit idle during the summer months. GSA’s partnership with the ROTC is an example of the agency’s dedication to support other federal agencies and commitment to saving taxpayer dollars.

Since 1954, GSA Fleet has been providing quality vehicles and efficient fleet management services to over 75 federal agencies. Growing from its origin in 1954 to just over 217,000 vehicles in 2010, the GSA Fleet is one of the largest non-tactical federal fleets in the U.S. government. GSA Fleet offers the most competitive full-service lease in the industry. Vehicle rates are based on a monthly lease and mileage charge, which includes all maintenance and fuel expenses.
