Commitment. Perseverance. Determination. These are just some of the qualities that make veterans valuable resources to GSA. They have chosen to continue their public service and the agency remains dedicated to acknowledging their extraordinary work. GSA’s Rocky Mountain and Northwest Arctic Regions are working with the U.S. Army’s Wounded Warrior and Department of Defense’s Operation Warfighter programs to help service members on medical hold reenter the workplace. These programs match veterans with critical positions, providing valuable work experience within the federal government. To date, GSA’s Northwest Arctic and Rocky Mountain Regions have placed seven veterans in three states across the country.
The Rocky Mountain Region has placed two soldiers in the Denver metro area through the Operation Warfighter program. Jeffrey McKnight, from Fort Carson Army Base in Colorado Springs, was matched with an opportunity to work with GSA’s Federal Acquisition Service and eventually earned a career development position as a budget analyst working in the agency’s business management division. Sergeant Nathan Bolema secured a position as a building manager at GSA’s downtown Cesar E. Chavez Memorial Building.
Through the Wounded Warrior program, GSA’s Northwest Arctic Region has placed five soldiers as interns in offices located in Washington and Alaska: Nathan Smith, Flight Operations Specialist for an Apache Attack Helicopter Unit and Frankie Lawson, a U.S. Army mechanic, work for the GSA’s Federal Acquisition Service Supply Operations Center located in Auburn, Washington. Chris Hall, a Brigade Intelligence Analyst, bolsters special projects and other programs in the Public Building Service’s organizational resources division in Auburn. Tony Lieggi, a military personnel officer, aids in lease review and data verification in the PBS leasing division. As a forward observer with his airborne unit, Robert “Zach” Firlan rose to the rank of staff sergeant before joining the GSA team in Anchorage, Alaska as a Lease Administration Manager intern.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2011, 21.6 million American men and women ages 18 and over are veterans; about three million of these veterans reported having a service-connected disability. Operation Warfighter and the Wounded Warrior program give GSA the opportunity to take advantage of the considerable talent, strong work ethic, and technical skills of our country’s veterans.
