It’s important to take time every so often to reflect on the work we’re doing for our customers. It’s no secret that GSA continues to do a great job providing our customers with the products and services they need, while saving taxpayer dollars. In GSA’s Office of Fleet Management (GSA Fleet) we meet these objectives by giving our customers cost savings and key resources through new technology and user-friendly tools.

In the first of two blogs, we’re going to look at how leasing through GSA Fleet makes it possible for agencies to enjoy the latest fleet technology while also saving taxpayer dollars.

How is that possible?

One way is through the use of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs), many of which use the latest technology to make vehicles more fuel efficient. In FY16, GSA Fleet awarded more than 1,700 AFV configurations, helping federal agencies both increase their energy security and reduce the cost of fueling government vehicles. GSA continues to make affordable vehicles with the latest technology a priority: in the current fiscal year, GSA Fleet negotiated savings of more than 39 percent on the Ford Focus Battery Electric compact sedan, enabling the federal government to pass cost savings on to the American taxpayer.

In addition, 83 percent of the vehicles purchased through GSA Fleet in FY16 were AFVs. By purchasing more AFVs and engaging in right-sizing efforts, GSA was able to provide customer agencies with leased fleet vehicles that are 14 percent more fuel efficient than the ones they replaced, which results in cost savings throughout the use of the vehicles. And by putting these new AFVs in the federal fleet, we’re not just giving customers a chance to drive vehicles with cutting-edge technology, they’re also benefiting from the latest safety enhancements.

AFVs are not limited to battery electric or hybrid vehicles. To make it easier to keep up with the latest advancements in fleet technology, GSA Fleet publishes an annual AFV Guide with acquisition information on all available AFVs. Updated each December, the AFV Guide provides customer agencies with the information they need to make informed acquisition decisions based on their unique missions and sustainability goals.

In our next blog, we’ll explore some of the tools that GSA Fleet provides to the federal fleet community to help them make acquisition decisions, track inventory, share resources, and better manage their fleet data.
