Open Government Partnership

Sponsored by the United Nations, the Open Government Partnership is a multilateral initiative that aims to secure concrete commitments from governments to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption, and harness new technologies to strengthen governance. Launched in September 2011 with the participation of 8 countries, it had 65 members by September 2014. As a charter member of the OGP, the United States is committed to work with civil society and other countries to achieve the goals of the OGP. Under a series of National Action Plans, the Obama Administration has undertaken a number of initiatives to make the government transparent, participative, collaborative and accountable to its citizens.

GSA has led many of the U.S. government's open government efforts, by developing and expanding Data.gov as the home of the U.S. government's open government; by facilitating the publication of free government consumer and business information online; by providing small and large businesses with easy and open access to government acquisition processes; by engaging the public in developing an electronic waste disposal program; and by supporting government-wide open government programs like proactive disclosure, records management and "plain writing" goals.

• Learn more about Data.gov, the home of the US government's open data. Based at GSA, it also provides Federal, state and local data, tools and resources to conduct research, build apps, design ata visualizations, and more. Data.gov was built with open source software. Anyone, especially local, state, and foreign governments are welcome to borrow the code behind Data.gov. Everyone is encouraged to contribute to improving the site.
