Drop-In Smart Switched Reluctance Motor [PDF - 186 KB] This “smart motor” combines an innovative electric motor design with a programmable variable speed drive and a controller that provides real time monitoring and cloud-based connectivity. Unlike induction or permanent-magnet motor designs that have remained largely unchanged for more than a century, this motor uses a switched reluctance (SR) design that purports to be simpler to manufacture and more reliable and efficient to operate. High Efficiency HVAC [PDF - 160 KB] High efficiency heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) units are a new class of rooftop unit (RTU) that can reduce building energy needs by half without reducing HVAC effectiveness. Blowing conditioned air through central shafts and ceiling spaces, the new technology incorporates variable speed controls on the refrigerant compressor, valves, and fans to efficiently heat or cool designated spaces as desired. The high efficiency HVAC RTUs capture and reuse heat, cold, and humidity from a building’s exhaust air and utilize waste heat from the compressors to reheat air that has been purposely over-cooled. High Performance Circulator Pump [PDF - 217 KB] This technology saves pump energy by incrementally adjusting a pump’s flow speed to a building’s changing demands. It also generates useful data by tracking temperature, flow rate, and energy use. Findings available in 2018.

Intelligent Energy Valves for Hydronic Systems [PDF - 213 KB] This technology reduces the power consumed by pumps in hydronic heating and cooling systems by maintaining an optimal temperature difference (Delta-T) between fluid supply and return lines. Findings available in 2018.

Smart Scrubbers for HVAC Load Reduction [PDF - 214 KB] This technology reduces the volume of outside air required to maintain indoor air quality (IAQ) by using absorbent materials to selectively remove contaminants from HVAC airflow. Findings available in 2018.
