WASHINGTON – The American Society of Interior Designers has given GSA one of its top honors. The Patron’s Prize is awarded to entities committed to excellence in interior design and that are firm proponents of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles.

“Thoughtful interior design is an integral component of a sustainable, high-quality, productive federal workplace,” said GSA Chief Architect Leslie Shepherd. ”We’re honored that the American Society of Interior Designers has recognized GSA's commitment to forging this critical link between workplace design and federal work force productivity.”

Founded in 2003, the Patron Prize is awarded to individuals and organizations exemplifying the highest sustainable practices.

Under the purview of GSA’s Design Excellence Program, improving interior design has taken on a new focus. The agency is challenging its designers to consider sustainable practices such as increasing the use of daylight, which decreases demands for energy; looking for opportunities to reuse or refurbish existing furnishings; and creatively thinking about the way space can be used for maximum utility.
