Spotlight on Small Businesses with Disaster Outreach Conferences

Posted July 5, 2006

Another important aspect of disaster preparedness will be the hot topic in July and August as the U.S. General Services Administration and other federal agencies team together to spotlight the various ways small and local businesses along the Gulf Coast can conduct business with the federal government during and after a disaster.

GSA Administrator Lurita Doan, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana will team on July 18 with representatives from federal agencies such as Federal Emergency Management Administration, the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Minority Business Development Agency, a division of the U.S. Department of Commerce, to speak during the Disaster Outreach Conference in New Orleans on July 18 at Gallier Hall.

Aimed at the small and local business community, the conference is one of a series to be held over the next few months across the Texas-Louisiana coastline which will provide important and valuable information which will help in the in the recovery, relief, and rebuilding of communities in the aftermath of natural disasters.

“The President has committed to not only making sure the storm-damaged areas of the Gulf Coast receive the recovery assistance needed, but he is also committed to making certain that we are prepared for whatever Mother Nature may hold for us this storm season,” said GSA Administrator Lurita Doan. ”These conferences are an important part of that effort.”

As the Gulf Coast faces the remainder of the 2006 hurricane season even while it continues to rebuild homes and businesses affected from last year’s storms, these agencies are educating the small business community on the required processes to do business with the federal government in the event of a disaster.

"It's imperative that the federal government do everything it can to utilize small and local businesses when dealing with disasters, agreed GSA Regional Administrator Scott Armey. “This conference serves a two-fold purpose - educating the businesses about our process and allowing us to learn who has products and services available that could be of use to us the next time a disaster strikes.” Mr. Armey is the principal executive overseeing GSA’s Greater Southwest Region.

According to GSA, additional Disaster Outreach Conferences are slated to be held throughout the summer along the Texas/Louisiana coastline in Beaumont, Corpus Christi, Galveston, and South Padre Island, Texas, as well as Lake Charles, Louisiana.
