GSA Presents First Small Business Mentor-Protege Award

WASHINGTON – The U.S. General Services Administration awarded the agency's first Administrator's Award for Mentorship Excellence to Catapult Technology and its protégé, Dexisive Inc., at a conference bringing program participants together to share successes and best practices.

"GSA is a key player driving President Barack Obama's small-business agenda, and we're working on it with all cylinders," GSA Administrator Martha N. Johnson said during her opening remarks. "With 70 successful pairings so far, the Mentor-Protégé Program is running strong, opening new opportunities for small businesses to compete for federal government contracts."

At the conference, Johnson presented the agency's first Administrator's Award for Mentorship Excellence to Catapult Technology, a service-disabled veteran-owned business, recognized for mentoring Dexisive Inc., a women-owned, service-disabled veteran-owned small business. Based in Bethesda, Md., Catapult Technology provides information technology and management consulting services to federal agencies. Reston, Va.-based Dexisive designs and deploys technology solutions to enhance IT capabilities and services.

The 1 1/2-year-old Mentor-Protégé Program, sponsored by GSA’s Office of Small Business Utilization, encourages the pairing of GSA prime contractors with smaller companies, including disadvantaged, women-owned, historically underutilized business zoned, veteran-owned, and service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses. In so doing, GSA promotes the business development of small businesses and enhances their capability to compete more successfully for federal government contracts and gain access to economic opportunities.

The Mentor-Protégé Program is just one of the many ways GSA helps support small business. For example, in fiscal year 2010, GSA helped more than 13,000 small businesses secure nearly 80 percent of the contracts on the Multiple Award Schedule Program. Thus far in FY '11, GSA has awarded more than a half-billion dollars to small business and is on track to exceed subcategory targets, as it did in FY '10.
