Eight years ago, the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and GSA entered into an agreement making the agency the Marines’ fourth party logistics (4PL) provider of commercial supplies.

Earlier this week, GSA marked the grand opening of the latest 4PL base supply store to stem from this agreement: The new ServMart at Camp Pendleton, a major Marine Corps installation about 40 miles north of downtown San Diego, is the eighth and final USMC-operated base supply store in the U.S. to transition to the 4PL model.

“This ServMart is the culmination of years of hard work, professionalism and dedication,” said Deputy Regional Commissioner for GSA’s Federal Acquisition Service, Les Yamagata. “It’s a true team effort among the Marines, GSA and industry.”

The result is a 60,000-square-foot flagship store stocked with more than 3,000 supplies to support the base’s mission.

“At GSA, we are committed to standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Marines and to supporting the warfighter’s mission of combat readiness by providing supplies and services at best value,” said Yamagata. “We do this by leveraging technology and the fourth party logistics model to garner efficiency and cost savings to our customers and the American taxpayers.”

The concept of a 4PL provider is an integrator that accumulates resources, capabilities and technologies to run complete supply chain solutions.

The ServMart at Camp Pendleton is the third 4PL venture GSA has opened in California and the fourth in the Pacific Rim Region, which includes Hawaii; GSA is preparing to transition two overseas Pacific Rim locations in FY16 -- Camp Butler on Okinawa and the Marine Corps Air Station in Iwakuni, Japan.
