Business Aside, What Gets The DFC Buzzing?

Every year come springtime you’ll find a rather unexpected event happening at the Denver Federal Center – a large bike race. Most weekends the DFC is a quiet campus; however, not when the DFC Bicycle Classic brings more than 500 bicyclists to compete. The event brings the campus to life with the bustle of people, music, and bikers of course. This has been the case for more than a decade.

The DFC Bicycle Classic is a great example of GSA’s Good Neighbor Program. Established in 1999, it was originally created as part of an effort to leverage our real estate holdings in support of downtown revitalization, smart growth and cultural vibrancy. Outside of the occasional goose crossing the road, the DFC makes for a bikers delight with limited weekend car traffic and lots of technical turns. saw an opportunity to reach out to GSA and it’s proven to be a win-win partnership ever since.

The race is run primarily by volunteers, with the exception of the timing, judges, security, referees and medical personnel. The event is a great way for to inform and advance the rights of all cyclists, particularly in Colorado. Their goal is to promote bicycle safety awareness, advocate bicycling interests, and serve as a resource of information for cyclists in need of legal assistance.

The Lakewood community has always been curious about what happens behind the fence that surrounds the nearly one-square mile facility. Over the years, GSA has had the opportunity to give people a reason to visit first-hand. Besides events like the DFC Bicycle Classic, you’ll find the 30th annual FedCup 5k that generally draws more than 200 runners and walkers every year. You can also experience the only weekday farmers market in Lakewood starting June 12 – August 28, 2014 from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. The market offers several food trucks that will entice you taste buds for lunch as well as fresh baked goods, eggs, vegetables, spices & soups, and more.
