Public Auction Opens for the Former James F. Battin US Courthouse

Exterior of the Former James F Battin US CourthouseOn April 16, 2013 the U.S. General Services Administration started counting down to the end of the public auction of the former James F. Battin U.S. Courthouse in Billings, MT. The target date for the inactivity period to begin and final bids to be received is April 23, 2013. Auction registration is still open and will remain open until the last bid is cast.

As part of GSA’s mission to deliver better value and savings to the taxpayer, GSA is moving to dispose of the property through a public auction. Last year, GSA sold more than 100 excess federal properties. The Obama Administration has set aggressive goals to use federal real estate assets more efficiently, and GSA has increased its efforts to help federal agencies identify unneeded properties and get them off of the government’s books.

This sale represents a unique opportunity to acquire a significant building located in the Central Business District of Billings at 316 North 26th Street. The sale includes one office building of approximately 221,000 square feet on a nearly an acre lot. Bids start at a dollar. Interested bidders will have to provide a $45,000 refundable registration deposit to register for the sale and to bid on the property. The former US James F. Battin U.S. Courthouse was originally constructed to serve as office and courthouse space and was continuously used as such until the completion of the new Billings Federal Courthouse.

Construction of the building was completed in 1965. The building is five stories and includes a mechanical penthouse, one main basement level, and a sub-basement, and a 56-car parking garage.
