Getting Taxpayers the Best Deal

We are moving excess and underutilized properties off of the government’s books and working to get the best deal for taxpayers. In the past year alone, the federal government has sold or transferred 97 excess properties valued at $82 million.

Among those adding to taxpayer savings are the following seven historic light stations being sold through the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act (NHLPA) on GSA's auction website in the summer of 2013.

  • Penfield Reef Light, CT
  • Saybrook Breakwater Light, CT
  • Butler Flats Light, MA
  • Graves Light, MA
  • Manastique East Breakwater Light, MI
  • Orient Point Light, NY
  • Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal North Pierhead Light, WI

Since the passage of NHLPA in 2000, GSA has transferred 92 lighthouses. Of those, 60 were deeded at no cost to approved stewards and 32 were sold through online auction, with proceeds totaling $3.6 million to date.

To check auction status or submit bids, go to or call 617-565-5700. The government seeks to obtain fair market value for the property.
