GSA announces final funding, sites for new Ala. federal courthouse

ANNISTON, Ala. — The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) received final authorization from Congress for a new 63,000-square-foot federal courthouse in Anniston, Alabama. The authorization clears the way for site acquisition, design and construction on the $38.18 million project to begin.

“The authorization allows GSA to move forward on this courthouse identified by the federal judiciary as a priority in the FY16 Omnibus Spending Bill,” said Mike Goodwin, GSA Public Buildings Service Regional Commissioner for the Southeast Sunbelt Region. “This investment will help GSA support the judiciary’s mission while spurring local economic development.”

The Congressional approval authorizes funds to meet the judiciary’s current and long-term needs for security, accessibility and operational efficiency in Anniston. The new courthouse will provide two courtrooms and three chambers to accommodate three judges. Other court related tenants include the U.S. Marshals Service and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

GSA has developed a list of three possible sites for the courthouse, which the agency will present for public comment in a Dec. 21 community meeting. The meeting — to be held at Anniston City Meeting Center from 5:30-7:30 p.m. — will provide a project overview and introduce the following downtown locations currently being evaluated:

  • Block 148- The current City Hall site bounded by 12th Street, 11th Street, Gurnee Avenue and Moore Avenue;
  • Block 149- Bounded by Gurnee Avenue, 11th Street, Moore Avenue and 10th Street; and
  • Block 151/159- Bounded by 14th Street, Moore Avenue, 13th Street and Grove Street.

Written comments about the proposed sites may also be submitted to the GSA Public Buildings Service at 77 Forsyth St., SW Atlanta, GA 30303, attention Ashish Desai by Jan. 21, 2017.

GSA will consider disposal options (ownership, transfer or sale) of the existing courthouse upon completion of the new building, expected in 2021.
