President’s 2017 Budget Request Includes $248M to Complete Calexico Land Port Modernization Project

SAN FRANCISCO — Today, U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Administrator Denise Turner Roth announced significant new investments that are a part of the President’s fiscal year 2017 budget request. The proposed budget is focused on tackling our nation's greatest challenges by making smart investments in federal infrastructure and includes funding for the Calexico Land Port of Entry in Southern California.

"The President’s budget makes necessary investments to further strengthen our nation’s real estate portfolio and our land ports of entry infrastructure,” said GSA Administrator Roth. “This proposal demonstrates the administration’s continued commitment to ensuring our ports effectively support economic growth by improving conditions for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic; it also provides U.S. Customs and Border Protection the modernized space it needs to secure our nation.”

The proposed budget includes the following investments in Calexico, Calif.:

Calexico West Land Port of Entry Phase 2 - $248 million

The Calexico West Land Port of Entry (LPOE) is the third busiest land port in California, with 4 million northbound vehicles and 4.8 million pedestrians crossing each year. GSA proposes $248 million to undertake the last phase a two-phase construction project for the reconfiguration and expansion of the existing LPOE in downtown Calexico, Calif. Phase 2 includes a new pedestrian processing facility; administrative offices; five southbound privately owned vehicle (POV) inspection lanes with canopies and booths; six additional northbound POV inspection lanes; a parking structure and demolition of the existing main building.

The expanded facilities will occupy both the existing inspection compound and the site of the former commercial inspection facility, decommissioned in 1996 when commercial traffic was redirected to the newly completed LPOE six miles east of downtown Calexico. The project will increase operation space, reduce traffic congestion, and create a safe environment for port employees and visitors.
