Washington, DC - The U.S. General Services Administration and Sprint Communications Co., L.P. modified their FTS2001 telecommunications service contract to include managed network services (MNS) as part of one-stop shopping for telecommunications services. MNS offers improved monitoring of routers and high-speed data switches and leads to enhanced network performance and efficiency.

Managed network services through the FTS2001 contract permits Sprint to be a single source for network design, implementation, operations and management of an agency's frame relay (FR) and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) routers and switches. Sprint's network operations center in Herndon, VA provides real-time, proactive network management of an agency's managed routers or managed switches with the objective of detecting and resolving 95% of network problems before the agency detects any trouble.

"Sprint's one-stop, managed network services package is a great enhancement to facilitate transition to our FTS 2001 contract and take customers to the next level of network services," said Sandy Bates, Commissioner of GSA's Federal Technology Service.

MNS enhances the current data networking services on the FTS2001 contract by providing comprehensive network design and optimization with an implementation that is easily scalable to meet changing needs of agencies. The service is available in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

"We are very pleased to have added our managed network services offering to the FTS2001 contract," said Tony D'Agata, vice president and general manager of Sprint Government Systems Division. "MNS is an excellent tool to ensure optimum performance of today's complex networks."

Four types of MNS are offered in the FTS2001 Contract Enhancement with Sprint:

- Managed Router Service- Includes design, integration and real-time management of routers.
- Managed ATM - Includes design, integration and real-time management. Managed ATM will facilitate future agency migration to Sprint's Integrated On-demand Network (ION). Available in the 48 contiguous states only.
- Managed Hubs - Extends reach of MNS beyond a Sprint managed router to an intelligent hub. Managed Hubs includes design, implementation and real-time management.
- Managed Implementation of Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) - Sprint designs, configures and implements a network and turns it over to the agency for its management by the agency.

The FTS2001 MNS enhancement offers several advantages to the Government:
- Initiation Charges - Waived on orders placed through the May 31, 2000
- Legacy Equipment - Sprint agreed to manage all existing FTS2000 equipment.
- Prices - 10% reduction in monthly prices for Router Management for transitioning agencies as compared to the FTS2000 contract.
- Discounts - Volume discounts for Government-wide use.
- MNS Consultation and Custom Design - Sprint will interview the agency and recommend a network design for MNS that the agency can order.
- Monitoring - Agencies can monitor MNS performance data via the Internet.
- Real-Time Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Access - SNMP access from - Sprint for Frame Relay and Asynchronous Transfer Mode is available at no cost.
- Integrated with FTS2001 Management - Service ordering, billing, trouble reporting and monthly reports follow FTS 2001 procedures.
- Free Upgrades - One free software upgrade is installed annually.
- Installations - Normal and out of business hours installations available.
- Maintenance - Same day and next day maintenance is available.
- Price Management Mechanism -Periodic review of MNS prices.

This is the latest in a series of modifications that allows GSA to enhance the FTS2001 contracts with up-to-date commercial telecommunications services and improvements available from Sprint to meet agency needs.
