GSA Wins Top Honor from National Trust for Historic Preservation

Washington, DC – David L. Winstead, Commissioner for the U.S. General Services Administration’s Public Buildings Service (PBS), today accepted the prestigious National Trust/Advisory Council for Historic Preservation Award for Federal Partnerships in Historic Preservation.  GSA shares this award with the New Mexico State Historic Preservation Office for its partnering efforts bringing new significance to an underutilized federal building. 

Amy Biehl High School was one of 21 national award winners honored by the National Trust.  Built in 1908 as Albuquerque’s U.S. Post Office and Courthouse, the three-story, red clay tile-roofed structure has occupied a prominent place on Albuquerque’s historic “Bankers’ Row” for nearly a century. Changing federal requirements through the years had left the building underutilized since 2001, the year Amy Biehl High School signed a long-term lease agreement with GSA. The school opened its doors on Jan. 18, 2006, bringing a boost to downtown Albuquerque. Today, an assembly hall has replaced a federal courtroom; the reception and study hall stand in place of a mailroom used during the state’s territorial days.

“GSA is committed to preserving federal legacy landmarks through our historic buildings program,” Winstead said in accepting the award at the 2006 National Preservation Conference in Pittsburgh. GSA recently completed renovations on the city’s historic U.S. courthouse. “Our goal is to shape this legacy and the way Americans regard their government through the nation’s public buildings.”

The National Preservation Awards are bestowed to distinguished individuals, nonprofit organizations, public agencies and corporations whose skill and determination give new meaning to their communities through preservation of America’s architectural and cultural heritage.
