Doan Tells Committee: GSA Making Significant Progress

Washington, DC – The U.S. General Services Administration has spent the past 10 months tightening internal financial controls, instituting sound management practices and seeking innovative ways to improve all of its operations, GSA Administrator Lurita Doan told a key U.S. House committee today.

Doan told House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform members that her top imperatives since being sworn in on May 31, 2006, have been to restore fiscal discipline at GSA, and to develop “a culture of continuous improvement by igniting the entrepreneurial energies throughout the entire organization.”

“These efforts over the past 10 months have resulted in a restoration of a clean audit, a balanced budget, and the identification of approximately $1 billion of wasteful or unneeded spending,” Doan said.

The Administrator said that she’s proud of efforts initiated to assist minority and small businesses. “This is a personal and professional passion for me, and I will continue the efforts I began the day I entered GSA to help minorities start their own successful businesses in their communities,” she said.

Doan also addressed committee concerns in detail regarding: a report GSA sought to detail its work with minority and disadvantaged small businesses; the nature of a regularly scheduled team-building “brown bag” lunch with non-career employees; successful contract extension negotiations between contract experts in GSA’s Federal Acquisition Service and Sun Microsystems; GSA actions affecting the accounting industry; and her actions regarding GSA’s Office of the Inspector General.
