GSAs San Francisco Federal Building Wins Sustainable Leadership Award

Washington, DC – A new San Francisco office complex managed by the U.S. General Services Administration won recognition for sustainable design from a major real estate association, the agency announced today.  GSA’s federal building in San Francisco received the award from CoreNet Global in the category of “Public Sector and Government” during CoreNet’s annual Summit in Denver, Colo., on Monday, April 30.

“This is another example of outstanding architecture in terms of integrated engineering, energy efficiency, and delivering high-quality workspace,” said GSA Public Buildings Service Commissioner David Winstead. “This building is distinctive and sets the tone for innovative design for years to come.”

The federal office building in San Francisco is a welcomed addition to the skyline.  It is located on Seventh and Mission Streets and serves as a link between the South of Market neighborhood and the urban Civic Center district.  The 18-story structure is long and slender with a translucent tower, glass facades and a metal screen.  Most workspaces have sunlight, reducing the energy for lighting by 26 percent.  Over 70 percent of the building will be cooled with natural ventilation.

 “GSA continues to forward the tradition of excellence by creating buildings that inspire us. By involving the community and addressing the needs of the public and the employees, this building is spectacular in all aspects,” said Peter Stamison, GSA Regional Administrator for the agency’s Pacific Rim Region.

Four other winners joined GSA in a record number of 60 nominations, signifying a dramatic increase in the awareness and use of sustainable practices by corporations and their service providers.
