Doan to Stress GSA Commitment to Small Business

New Orleans, LA – Administrator Lurita Doan, invited to address the National Black Chamber of Commerce on Friday, will highlight the U.S. General Services Administration’s (GSA) ongoing commitment to small businesses in the Gulf Coast states and nationwide.

GSA during Doan’s tenure has tried to ensure that Gulf Coast small businesses are included in clean-up, renovation and other work made necessary by Hurricane Katrina. More than 62 percent of the contracting dollars that GSA awarded in the third quarter of Fiscal Year 2007 for work performed in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana have gone to small businesses.

“We’re going to keep pushing to make sure that any interested and qualified small firm can get on the GSA schedule, that we do a thorough job of tracking that participation, and that we continue holding outreach events aimed at teaching small businesses how the process works,” Administrator Doan said.

Organizers expect the Chamber’s 15th annual conference to draw some 300 business owners and chamber leaders from around the nation. The chamber, dedicated to “economically empowering and sustaining African-American communities through entrepreneurship and capitalistic activity,” invited Administrator Doan to speak because of her record as a successful small businesswoman and her current position as GSA Administrator.

“As one of the only federal agency heads who is a former small business owner as well as a GSA schedule holder, I understand and appreciate what it takes for small firms to succeed,” Administrator Doan said. “We’re going to keep chipping away at any bureaucratic barriers that stand between government contracting opportunities and small, women, service-disabled veteran, HUBZone and minority-owned businesses.

Administrator Doan will also present a special commendation to Harry Alford, president, CEO and co-founder of the Black Chamber of Commerce. Alford will be honored for championing the cause of African-American entrepreneurs, and, “for leading and co-founding an organization dedicated to the economic empowerment of African-American communities throughout the nation.”
