IT Standards

The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) determines and maintains GSA’s IT software standards through a transparent governance process. The CTO’s team shepherds employees' requests for new kinds of software through a process to have accessibility (Section 508) and security subject matter experts ascertain that the software will work safely and effectively in the GSA environment. The graphic below shows the process for getting requests approved.

In addition the CTO team will encourage employees to review the IT Standards List contained in GEAR, for alternative products that may better meet their needs.  The CTO will consider existing items on the list when providing their final decision. This work addresses risk, reduces IT costs, and ensures interoperability.  Additional details can be found in GSA’s policy CIO 2160.1F CHGE 1 Information Technology (IT) Standards Profile.

The IT Standards process can be applied within all agencies and we welcome questions and requests for discussions or demonstrations. For more information contact Cindy Smith in the CTO's office at cindya.smith@gsa.gov.
