GSA Awards Contract for Levin Courthouse Project
Christman Company selected for four-year, $140 million renovation effort.

CHICAGO -- The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) announced it has selected The Christman Company for construction services at the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse in Detroit, Michigan. The project will help prevent costly emergency repairs in the future, resulting in significant savings for American taxpayers and a safer and more efficient federal space for building tenants and visitors.
From GSA Regional Administrator Ann P. Kalayil:
“The project at the 80-year-old Levin Courthouse is an example of GSA’s commitment to our historic buildings, Detroit, and the American people who work in and visit the Courthouse. By extending the life of this federal space, GSA will ensure it remains an integral part of the city’s historic fabric for years to come. In addition, GSA’s efforts to ensure local contractors and small businesses have the opportunity to bid and work on the project will serve as an economic catalyst for the city and surrounding communities.”
- The Christman Company, a Michigan-based firm whose Detroit office will be managing the project, will serve as the Construction Manager as Constructor (CMc) for the Theodore Levin U.S. Courthouse alteration project.
- The $140 million, four-year project will include replacement or repair of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, life safety improvements, upgrades to the elevators, and modernization of the public restrooms to improve accessibility and water efficiency.
- Construction will take approximately four years to complete.
- The 770,000 square foot building will remain fully occupied through the duration of the project.
- All work will be sensitive to the historic building and, where possible, reclaim lost or damaged historic building fabric.
- Last year, EYP Architecture & Engineering was selected under the GSA Design Excellence program to provide design services for the project.
