Hurff Ackerman Saunders Federal Building wins LEED Silver
Release Date: April 6, 2016
Congratulations to GSA and the Juneau Property Management Team for guiding Hurff Ackerman Saunders Building’s journey to receive a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Existing Building (EB) Silver certification and Guiding Principles compliance for FY 2015. The Federal Building is one of only seven buildings in Alaska with a LEED EB certification and GSA’s first Alaska LEED EB building! Between unique weather patterns, the real feel of island isolation, and the cost of moving goods and waste in and out of the area, the Property Management team found new and creative ways to meet green procurement guidelines and operations mandates.
As part of the GSA team, the REACH (building janitorial and custodial contractor) staff played an instrumental role in obtaining the LEED Silver Certification. They pioneered using recycled rubber landscaping chips to fill in the planting beds, since every season the organic bark disappears during the harsh winters. They have also experimented with robotic vacuum cleaners for nighttime cleaning.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) [a nongovernment website] remains one of the most popular green building certification programs worldwide. Developed by the nonprofit U.S. Green Building Council, it includes a set of rating systems for the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of green buildings, homes, and neighborhoods that aims to help building owners and operators be environmentally responsible and use resources efficiently.
The Green Building Initiative’s (GBI) Guiding Principles Compliance (GPC) [a nongovernment website] designation is a GBI-appointed third-party assessment process that verifies compliance, and awards a Compliance Score and Rating. It is the first independent assessment and rating program that enables government agencies to determine levels of compliance with the Guiding Principles, resulting from Executive Order 13514. By assembling the myriad of federal compliance requirements into one program, GPC facilitates the process to improve the sustainability of federally owned, leased or operated buildings.
