GSA's Northwest/Arctic Region Team Worked Around the Clock to Support FEMA Oso Mudslide Recovery Efforts
Release Date: May 13, 2014
After the March 22 Oso, Washington, mudslide, GSA’s Northwest/Arctic Region worked around the clock to secure a short term lease for FEMA’s Operations Center and provide much needed equipment and resources in support of the Oso mudslide recovery efforts. Shortly after a Federal Disaster Declaration was signed, GSA’s leasing team began reaching out to local realtors and developers to identify potential sites that met FEMA’s needs. Within 24 hours, GSA’s leasing experts found an ideal property owned Coastal Community Bank in Everett. Coastal Community Bank had recently purchased the property at 5415 Evergreen Way for its corporate headquarters and a new bank branch. The community bank was more than willing to partner with GSA because their customers had been impacted by the disaster. A few days later the lease was signed and the Lessor agreed to contract for the needed electrical work immediately to allow FEMA to occupy the space as soon as possible. Working around the clock the contractor completed all the necessary work allowing FEMA to occupy the space by and opened the Operations Center by within 4 days. In addition to the lease space, GSA’s Federal Acquisition Service provided the necessary support to allow FEMA to secure a forklift and other emergency supplies using GSA Schedules. GSA Fleet Service Representatives along the West Coast also worked to provide support vehicles including a refrigerated box truck and 12-passenger van. GSA also contacted Joint Base Lewis-McChord for assistance and the military partners provided additional vehicles.
