GSA Memorial Day Celebration Honors D-Day Hero
Veteran-Owned Small Business Event Follows
ATLANTA -- Today, the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Regional Office will commemorate Memorial Day by honoring a World War II veteran who parachuted into Normandy, France on D-Day, June 6, 1944.
GSA’s “We Remember” Memorial Day ceremony presages the 70th Anniversary of D-Day and will feature a keynote presentation by Master Sergeant (MSG) Carl Beck, 89, who participated in seminal WWII campaigns, including the D-Day Invasion, Operation Market Garden, and the Battle of the Bulge. MSG Beck earned the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Presidential Unit Citation with Cluster, and other prestigious honors for his service in the US Army’s 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment from 1944-1945. He spent another 17 years of Army service in Saudi Arabia, Iran and various US states, and commemorated the 50th and 60th anniversaries of D-Day with ceremonial parachute landings into Normandy.
STATEMENT from Erv Koehler, Acting Regional Administrator, GSA
“We are forever indebted to our national heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom and democracy. Master Sergeant Beck is a living reminder of the valor with which service members defend American values. The people of GSA are honored to pay tribute to the fallen and uplift those veterans who have returned to us.”
