GSA holds community meeting in Calexico

In its first Community Representatives Committee (CRC) meeting since the Calexico West Land Port of Entry (LPOE) project received funding, GSA representatives met with stakeholders at Carnegie Technology Center in Calexico, California on March 11. Land Port of Entry Program Manager, Anthony Kleppe and Project Executive, Paul Andrade, provided an overview of the Calexico West LPOE renovation and expansion project to a receptive audience of approximately 25 local community stakeholders.
The presentation covered the different elements of construction in Phases 1 and 2, which together involve the construction of a brand new northbound vehicle and pedestrian processing facilities, headhouse, administration building, vehicle secondary inspection area and expanded southbound vehicle lanes. Mr. Kleppe also spoke about GSA’s ambitious small business goals and cited success stories with the San Ysidro and Mariposa LPOE projects as examples of GSA’s commitment to including small businesses in constructing major projects like Calexico.
“The Community Representative Committee meetings are a great forum in which GSA can obtain feedback from local stakeholders,” said Kleppe. “We use this information to make the project more responsive to the needs of the region we serve.”
Congressman Juan Vargas, who represents Calexico as part of California’s 51st Congressional District, attended the committee meeting to provide his support and perspective on the project and the impact it will have. In his comments, he underscored the economic importance of the port’s improvements to the immediate community as well as to the greater region.
Work on Phase 1 is expected to begin in September 2015, and construction is scheduled to last 30 months. Phase 2 remains unfunded.
